Rule Amendment - AHL substitution
Replacement of AHL Players in Season
Currently the rules state that AHL players can only be added through the entry draft in the offseason. Kirk has suggested there should be a way to refill these slots if available.
The current rule is:
4. Minor league rosters will consist of players drafted in rookie drafts that haven't yet played in the NHL. All minor league players must be selected in the NHL Entry Draft(i.e. no 16 year old phenoms that are still trying to get through high school). These players will have a 3 year retention time before they are required to be called up to the major league roster. Therefore, a player drafted in this year's minor league draft (Taylor Hall) would be given a three year retention time and by season 4 would have to be called up if not already done so. (The Minor League Entry draft in subsequent years may be extended to two rounds if their is significant turnover of players)
The amendment I would add would be:
Substitute players may be sent down and protected for the three year time frame other than those currently protected. If a manager decides to call up an AHL player and would like to send down another in his place, the player being sent down must be officially on the manager's roster, be in the NHL minors and have not played more than 25 NHL games. Therefore, no manager may cherry pick some minor leaguer that has not played atleast one NHL game to fill the void. Once the player has been sent down, the player that has been called up will be removed from the AHL protected player list and the man sent down will be added.
If there are questions, please ask before voting and I can clarify. Because this is not quite into the regular season but both drafts have taken place, I will be looking for 9 affirmative votes to pass or 4 negative votes to decline the addition of the amendment. The poll will be active for 7 days, if a manager abstains, that vote will count as an affirmative if needed.

Question
Could this not lead to another Avery situation...(sorry kirk not to overuse this example but....) If a player with loads of experience gets sent down for conditioning or something could this amendment not allow a team to stash away a guy without taking up roster space.

I could edit it so that the player would need to have less than 20 games? 40 games? That would ensure that the player would still be in that rookie phase rather than having 1000 games like Avery.

If that's the case I'll vote for the amendment. I'd suggest 25 games (that's the NHL's definition of a rookie).

I'd agree to the 25 games as well. We don't want someone......ahem...... stashing established NHL players in their minors.
